Abnormal Failure : An artificially induced failure of a component, usually as a result of "abnormals" testing for regulatory agency safety compliance. active filter

Absorption : Due to impurities in the glass of an optical fiber, the resultant loss of light.

Active Filter : An electronic filter combining resistors and capacitors with active circuit devices such as operational amplifiers. Normally active filters match ideal filters more so than passive filters do.

Alias Frequency : A false lower-frequency component that occurs in analog data that is sampled from data that is originally digitized at too low a frequency.

Aliasing : In a sampled data system, the analog input must be sampled at a rate of at least twice the bandwidth of the signal in order to avoid loss of data (Nyquist Theorem). Adhering to the Nyquist Theorem prevents in-band "alias" signals, which are beat frequenc

Ambient Level : The values of signals and noise that exist at a test location when the device under test is not active.

Ambient Noise Level : The level of acoustic noise existing at a given location, such as in a room, in a compartment, or at a place out of doors. Note 1

Analog : The transmittal of information which incorporates a continuous physical variable such as voltage amplitude or frequency variations.

Analog-to-Digital Conversion : The process that changes an analog signal into a digital magnitude value.

Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) : A device that converts an analog signal to a digital signal that represents equivalent information). Synonyms are analog-to-digital (A-D) coder, analog-to-digital (A-D) encoder.

Anechoic Chamber : An enclosure especially designed with walls that absorb sound or radiation, creating an essentially free-field environment for testing.

Antenna : A device used for radiating and receiving radio waves. It accomplishes this by changing electrical currents into electromagnetic radio waves and vice versa.

Antenna Array : An arrangement of two or more antennas whose spacing and connections are such that they are in phase and their combined effects are additive.

Antenna Gain : How much radiated and/or received power, in a given direction, increases when an antenna is in use as compared to the power radiated in the same direction by a standard omni-directional antenna.

Antenna Polarization : The orientation of the radiated electric field in relation to the earth's surface.

Anti-Alias Filter : A filter that attenuates noise and high-frequency components of an analog signal prior to its conversion into a digital value.

Area Analysis : An technique of image-analysis used to find the area in an image that falls within a specific area of gray levels.

Attenuation : The decrease in intensity of a signal, beam, or wave as a result of absorption of energy and of scattering out of the path to the detector, but not including the reduction due to geometric spreading.

Attenuation Coefficient : The rate of optical power loss relative to the distance along the fiber.

Auto Frequency Control : (AFC) (As regards antennas) A circuit that gives a receiver the capability to "lock on" to a transmitter's signal, and thereby allows it to follow any deviations that happen to occur in the transmitter's frequency.

Autopolarity : The ability of an instrument to measure and display an input of either polarity without switching the input leads.

Autoranging : The ability of an instrument to switch among ranges automatically. The ranges are usually in decade steps.
